Why is My AC Blowing Warm Air?

During summer, most of us rely on our AC systems to keep us cool and comfortable all season long. We can all probably agree that there’s nothing more frustrating than a malfunctioning AC system, especially when the temperatures outside are rising. Since the job of an air conditioner is to circulate cool air throughout your home, why do some of us suffer from an AC that starts blowing warm air?

There are many reasons as to why your AC might be blowing warm air. Since no one wants to sit inside an uncomfortable house in the summer, we’re sharing some of the most common reasons why cold air isn’t coming from your AC and steps to take in order to have the issue resolved. Keep reading to find out!

Check Your Thermostat

Before you do anything, check and make sure your thermostat is set correctly. The fan should be set to “auto” and the “cool” mode should be selected. A mistake homeowners often make is setting the fan to “on” instead of “auto”, which means it will run all the time, not just during a cooling cycle. As a result, air coming from your vents in between cooling cycles can feel warm.

Clogged Air Filters

Once you’ve made sure your thermostat is set properly, check your air filters. Over time, air filters can become clogged with dust, dirt, and other debris, preventing the air from moving through your system. Dirty filters will not allow cool air to circulate through your home, hence why it might feel warm to you.

Check your filter and if it’s dirty, replace it with a new one. You can find air filters at any local home improvement store, but always make sure you select the filter with the correct dimensions.

Clogged Condenser Coil

If your condenser coil, or outdoor unit, is clogged, turn off the unit and clear any debris away from the unit. Try and keep at least a 2-foot clearance around your outdoor unit at all times to avoid any buildup that could clog it.

Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant leaks are one of the most common reasons why your AC is blowing warm air, as the leak will cause low refrigerant levels over time. If this is the case for your AC, it’s very important you rely on the professionals at Dynamic Heating and Cooling to fix the refrigerant issue as there are many chemicals involved. Always make sure you’re scheduling annual HVAC maintenance and tune-ups to prevent these issues from happening.

Damaged Compressor

A faulty compressor prevents the refrigerant from moving between the indoor and outdoor unit. If you think your compressor has broken down, call a professional technician right away to come take a look. Compressors are quite the expense to replace, so it’s best to consult a professional before making any decisions on your own.

Electrical Failure

This goes without saying, but if your air conditioner is blowing warm air, check and make sure it’s plugged in properly. If the outlet and cord look good to you, there could be something wrong with your electrical panel. A blown fuse or tripped breaker could be the reason your air conditioner is malfunctioning.

Regular AC Maintenance

Making AC maintenance part of your regular routine is essential to keep your system operating at peak performance. Not only will annual maintenance and tune-ups extend the lifespan of your current system, but it will also prevent the above issues from happening.
