Is it Time to Replace Your Boiler?

boiler

Boilers are reliable and sturdy heating systems, typically lasting a couple of decades when they’re properly installed and maintained. If your home has a boiler, you’re likely quite happy with its performance and dependability, not to mention pleased with the increased comfort that comes from radiant heating.

However, not even the most reliable boiler lasts forever. If yours is nearing the end of its lifespan, you’re in a bit of a pickle. How exactly are you supposed to know when it’s time to replace your boiler?

Perhaps you’ve needed boiler repair in Culpeper, VA too often for your liking. Or you’ve noticed that your utility bills are higher than average during the heating season. Let’s go over how you can determine when it’s time for boiler replacement.

System Age

If you don’t know how old your boiler is, now’s a good time to find out. This is the biggest factor that’ll help you determine how much longer it’ll last.

The average lifespan of a gas boiler is 15-20 years although some have been known to exceed the 20-year mark. If your boiler is at the 20-year mark or if it’s older than that, we recommend that you have it replaced.

At this age, boilers have a high risk of complete breakdowns. Their performance can also really start to decline at the tail end of their lifespan. Your boiler might seem like it’s working okay when all of a sudden it won’t turn on or produce any heat. You don’t want this happening on the coldest day of the year.

Corrosion and Leaks

Boiler corrosion occurs when iron that is present in the boiler system is exposed to oxygen and water. If you see any external signs of rust on your boiler, that’s a sure sign of corrosion. Older boilers are especially subject to rust and corrosion and signs of these are hints that replacement is due.

You’ll also need to check for cracks, small cuts, or broken valves that could allow oxygen to make its way into the boiler. As these parts become subject to corrosion over time, an aging boiler is also prone to developing leaks in its valves and connection points. If you ever detect leaks coming from your boiler, you should contact our team to check these out.

Decreased Performance

This could mean different things to various homeowners. Some signs that your boiler’s performance isn’t up to snuff include the uneven heating of your home, lackluster heat, and delays in heating. If your home comfort level just isn’t the same as it used to be, it’s time to consider upgrading your boiler. Why pay so much for your heating when it’s not delivering the results you want?

High Energy Bills

A boiler that’s becoming more and more costly to run isn’t one that you want to keep around. If your boiler is at the end of its lifespan, increased energy bills can be a sign that the system is on the decline. When you replace your outdated boiler with a high-efficiency model, you’ll start saving money on energy costs and increase your home comfort levels.
